The Importance of Battery Registration for BMW or cars equipped with Intelligent Battery Sensor (IBS)
Your BMW battery was flat and you had a replacement at the nearest workshop. After approximately 8 to 17 months, your battery is dead again. You must be wondering, while the original BMW battery could last 4 to 5 years, the subsequent one could not even make it through 17 months?
It is common to see similar cases happening to many BMW drivers in Singapore. The usual lifespan of an original BMW with battery located in the boot is 4 to 5 years. If your car requires replacement more frequent than usual (assuming your car is in good condition), you are either using an incompatible battery and/or did not do a battery registration required by your car’s electronic control unit (ECU).
The two factors mentioned above could be a result from overcharging too. Sometimes, overcharging may lead to electrical malfunction. As you know, BMW manufacturer installs a system, Intelligent Battery Sensor (IBS) in your car. IBS is attached to the negative terminal of the battery and contains micro-processors, which measure and monitor voltage, current, charging cycles and temperature of the battery. Without registering your new battery with the ECU, it would not notice that there is a change in the battery type. It will worsen the situation if you have changed your used battery to an incompatible one as IBS will overcharge the new battery thinking that it is still the old battery which would result in an early battery failure problem.
It is especially so if you try to save money and replace your battery with a low spec normal maintenance-free flooded battery when your original battery was an AGM type.
Since it is BMW, the electrical system has to be different from the rest of the car makers. The computer that controls the alternator charges an AGM battery differently from a normal maintenance-free flooded battery. We have seen enough to confirm that the car’s ECU will spoil the battery sooner than it can originally last. Drivers who are not well-informed may sometimes make complaints about the quality of the battery not knowing that it was only because of a compatibility issue.
If you do not wish to spend more money on potential repairs, a battery registration should be done every time you replace your battery. Getting your battery registered after replacing it will ensure a proper operating electrical system. It will maximize your battery performance and lifespan and you should only be replacing your battery every 4 to 5 years.
